Sometimes tying fancy flies helps make your regular flies just a little bit better. I recently attended a local Cotinga Club meeting where we tied the Rusty Rat. I choose to tie it on a double hook, since I have never tied a fly on that type of hook. Mine turned out pretty well, if I may say so myself.
Fly Fishing with Joe Egry
I believe the fly fishing can be experienced on many levels and that one need not be an expert to appreciate the beauty of the fish and the flies, the peace of the environment, and the fun and challenge of the sport.
I also believe the fly fishing is fun and doesn’t always mean catching fishing. It is called fishing, not catching. The day will be spent in the pursuit of fishing and enjoying being in the same environs where we find fish. Whether that is a stream or on a lake will be up to the client. As a guide, my goal is not only to find the fish, but also to teach the client something new. It’s not just about how many fish the client caught or how big, it’s the experience the client had throughout the day and the knowledge he or she gained while fishing with me that’s important. I wish to provide a quality experience being conscious of all the beauty and wildlife around us while increasing the client’s fishing knowledge.
I think Harry Middleton best summed up my philosophy in the following quote:
“I enjoy trout. They are never disappointing company. They like the things I like – clean mountain streams, swift-moving waters, wildness.” Harry Middleton
For those that might not know. I take Western and Tenkara Fly Fishing guided trips on the weekends into Rocky Mountain National Park, as I has a regular job during the week . You can book trips with me by calling the Elkhorn Fly Rod and Reel at 970-227-4707 and requesting a Western or Tenkara Fly Fishing guided trip with Joe Egry. I am a Zen Tenkara Certified Guide and a member of Tenkara USA’s Guide Network.
I have fishing in my blood. I caught my first fish at two years old. I have been fly fishing for over twenty years and Tenkara fly fishing for three years. I have guided in Rocky Maintain National Park for ten years and knows the Park’s waters well. I am pretty laid back, but I am passionate about fishing. My favorite trip is taking beginner fly fisher’s out on the water. Teaching is the focus of the trip, learning about the rigging the equipment, casting, reading the water, and Safety being number one. I like my clients to be able to go out on their own after the trip and having some basic knowledge about fly fishing and be able to catch fish.
The store is now setup and is working. I will be adding more of my flies and a new category of fly, the kebari for Tenkara (Japanese style of fixed-lined fly fishing). Tenkara is a much simplified method of fly fishing and is a BLAST! Makes me feel like a kid again, where all I focused on is the fishing without worrying over all the gear.
